In Italy every journey corresponds to an inner experience, a traversing of the soul before that of the territory. Every site, from a hidden hamlet to a city of art, preserves a different way of dwelling and of imagining beauty. Italians do it beautifully was inspired by this wandering gaze, by an itinerary that crisscrosses the country without a preset destination, chasing stories, architectures, interiors, gardens, and visions of life. In our beloved peninsula, dwelling is always a story of continuity. Even the most innovative project starts by having to deal with what exists, with what has been built over the centuries, and with a landscape that banishes neutrality. In Italy architecture has to consider restrictions, regulations, and the long term; but it is this complexity that leads to our unique way of understanding space.
Restoration, transformation and redevelopment involve interpretation, comprehension and listening. Every wall, every courtyard, every old floor asks to be understood before being modified. This is how a project becomes a gesture of care and knowledge, an act that combines past and present but without ceding to nostalgia, because for us Italians modernity is never erasure but dialogue.
The buildings illustrated in this book - houses and hotels - reveal the same tension, in other words the creation of harmony without foregoing character. These spaces speak of balance and emotion, where light generates form and matter restores truth. Every project narrates a different Italy, an Italy that is discreetly renewed, that acknowledges its most authentic language as being hidden in the quality of the details and in intelligent gestures.

There is no one way of being Italian; likewise, there is no one concept of beauty. There is, however, a thin red line uniting everything: the ability to transform an everyday routine into an aesthetic experience; to consider making and creating as something important; to generate continuity between hand and mind. This book was inspired by this shared, informed and curious gaze: a mosaic of places and people who have bestowed on the verb dwelling a much deeper meaning... Belonging.
