I believe what gives pleasure to a viewer is the seemingly effortless ease of execution. Fred Astaire and Mohammed Ali had it, as did Velasquez, Zorn and Sargent. As in all things, it takes a lot of practice and hard work.
I also like to see brush strokes and marks left on the painting that don't try to hide the illusion the artist is trying to create. How often have you admired a work only to find, on closer inspection, that it is nothing but slapdash and dribbles; yet when you step back, it all comes together. A quote by Francis Bacon comes to mind: "The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery." Doug Lew.
Doug Lew was born in Shanghai, China, and moved to the United States at the age of fifteen. After completing degrees in Art and History, he embarked on a successful career in advertising, while at the same time pursuing his vocation as a painter. Praised by critics and treasured by collectors, his watercolors have been displayed at group and personal exhibitions, and have won numerous awards. He is the author of books about watercolor painting, and taught the use of watercolor in architecture at the University of Minnesota.
