This new title in the series deals with the last quarter of the eighteenth century. The introductory essay to the book sets the historical and artistic scene and this is followed by the usual detailed description of exceptional pieces of the period. From a painstaking examination of the furniture held by museums, historic residences and palaces, organized according to geographical area, there emerge both the major centres and the typical local features. Thus we learn that Rome was the centre in which the Neoclassical style in interior decoration first caught on, through Piranesi, in the mid- seventeenth century. From here the fashion spread throughout Italy.
