The discovery of an unpublished documentary corpus concerning the Boboli Gardens has enabled this study to almost entirely reconstruct the events of the sculpture workshop, to identify the artists, and to facilitate the collocation of the works within the original iconographic project. Numerous works were recovered including many inspired by rural scenes and the statue of Venus in the "Fontana dell'isola", all previously considered lost. Further details have emerged from the complex personality of Cosimo II and from the social status of sculptors in Florence at that time.
