This monograph offers the first comprehensive study devoted to Johannes van Bronchorst (Utrecht, 1627-Amsterdam, 1656), a painter long eclipsed by his more celebrated father, Jan Gerritsz. van Bronchorst. Although his career was cut short by an early death at the age of twenty-nine, Johannes emerges as a key figure in mid-seventeenth-century Dutch painting, occupying a pivotal position in the transition from caravaggesque naturalism to classicism. Untilnow, he has been treated only sporadically in the scholarly literature, most fully in a single section of Thomas Döring's 1993 study of the Bronchorst family; no independent monograph has previously been devoted to him.
At the core of the volume is a reconstruction of Johannes's critical reception, biography and career, with particular emphasis on his decisive Italian sojourn in Rome and Venice and on the distinctive synthesis that followed: an intensely personal reworking of late caravaggism fused with the discipline of Dutch classicism, yielding a pictorial language at once unmistakable and immediately recognisable within the competitive milieu of Amsterdam. Special attention is given not only to the formative role of Jan Gerritsz. in his son's early development, but also to the influence that Johannes's mature style appears to have exerted on his father's late work following his return from Italy. The study also sheds new light on the artist's younger brother, Gerrit, an intriguing yet little-known figure.
The volume concludes with a fully updated list of works attributed to Johannes van Bronchorst, including those now excluded from his oeuvre.
