Bijoy Jain. Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award 2012

Indian architect Bijoy Jain and his office Studio Mumbai Architects combine excellently traditional craftwork and architecture using meagre resources. The book presents Studio Mumbai's workshop and five wooden residential buildings built in the tropical state of Maharashtra, on the coast of the Arabian Sea, and at a resort in the Himalayan Mountains.
What all the buildings have in common is the combination of traditional work methods and the demands of modern life.
Wooden beams obtained from demolished buildings get a new lease of life in the hands of skilled joiners. The treatment of materials and the beauty of the joints are stunning.
