Rembrandt

Rembrandt occupies his very own place among the Dutch seventeenth-century painters of the human figure. Throughout the years he changed his technique, but his style remained personal and recognisable. Recently it has been posited that Rembrandt aimed at recognisability for the purpose of being as conspicuous as possible on the art market, almost in the sense of employing a trademark. There is no evidence that either Rembrandt or his contemporaries thought anything of a kind. Yet it is certain that Rembrandt.s 'manner' was recognised as such in his own time, and that he had many pupils to whom he taught his 'manner' and that there were several followers who attempted to learn and assimilate it by themselves. However it is often difficult to determinate just who was a pupil and who was a follower of Rembrandt.
