Matematica, cultura e società 2004

The "Centro di Ricerca Matematica Ennio De Giorgi" is involved mainly in research but has among its aims to contribute to the knowledge of mathematics for a nonspecialised public. The "public lessons" that took place in 2004, following the series entitled Matematics Culture and Society started in 2003, are meant to satisfy this need.
By tackling various topics, with different approaches, these lessons propose to illustrate some aspects of the role of mathematics in past and present society;
to communicate how much mathematics is widespread in culture, science and technology, today more than yesterday and, finally, to contribute in such a way as to reduce the numbers who consider the division between the two cultures to have a value.
