Down through the ages, home interiors have been depicted in many ways: from paintings, drawings and engravings to photographs. In Het Nederlandse interieur in beeld 1600-1900, the variation in these representations can be encountered in the more than 450 illustrations included in this publication. For the first time, such a wealth of visual material accompanied by written explanations provides a diverse yet coherent picture of domestic residential culture in which Dutch people have lived down through the centuries. The three hundred years covered by the book has been divided into six fifty-year periods, each of which is preceded by an introduction that discusses the typical aspects of the residential cultures for that periods. The book is the result of an in-depth study conducted by the Onderzoeksschool Kunstgeschiedenis, in particular, the Institute for Art History at Leiden University. They conducted their research in collaboration with the Department for the Preservat.
