(Re)uniting city and country. New research on urban and suburban socio-topographical structures. Proceedings of the International Conference held in Rome (14-15 November 2024)

This volume inaugurates the IN-ROME Studies Series and explores the dynamic relationship between cities and their surrounding landscapes. Its objective is to enhance our understanding of the complex connections between urban and peri-urban regions by bringing together cutting-edge research from diverse theoretical and empirical perspectives. In doing so, it narrows the disciplinary divide that commonly separates the study of cities from that of their hinterlands, and to overcome the limitations posed by treating them as distinct topographical entities. Most of the contributions originate from a conference linked to the ERC-funded project, IN-ROME - The INscribed city: urban structures and interaction in imperial ROME, which aims to re-unite research on Rome's urban area inside the Aurelian Wall and the city's suburbium for a better understanding of the socio-topographical structures that allowed this first mega-city to thrive.
