The exhibition inaugurated in Milan, at the Fondazione Antonio Mazzotta, presents the works of five among the best Italian exponents of satyrical drawing and caricature.

The exhibition is made up of about 400 drawings and watercolours by Galantara, Scalarini, Sironi, Guareschi and Altan, starting from the years of the unification of Italy up to nowadays, passing through monarchy, the wars, Fascism, up to our modern times, through monarchy, the wars, Fascism, the reconstruction, the passage from the rural world to industrialization, the social fights and so on.

The common point of the authors on display is the powerful and caustic satyrical vein, dissacrating towards the government, be it monarchy of republic, towards the Church and the social differences and injustice to people. The political position of each author is often different, some of them are Socialists others are against the left like Guareschi, or belong to Fascist positions, like Sironi. This does not influence their moral integrity of judgement that condemns the hipocrisies of the power and takes the defence of the poor, often risquing jail or deportation like Guareschi and Scalarini. These authors have shown the Italians their defects, talking to their mind and heart; they tried to let people understand history by unveiling the tragedies that happened during the growth of our nation.
